Farmington Wins Southington Tourney
In the first year of a girls bracket at the SYBA Basketball Tournament the 7th grade (Picard) team earned the title of tournament champions. It was a fabulous effort with every player contributing all weekend long. The girls, in dominating fashion, won their first three games by an average of 24 points. However, the championship game proved to be more challenging. But a tough defensive effort ensured the victory over the host team with a final score of 37-25.
In the championship game several players made significant contributions and Anna L always came up big at key moments. When the team was struggling offensively she made a key basket. When Southington was on the fast break she prevented several easy baskets. She also came up with key rebounds to limit a very good offensive team to one shot. Anna finished with 9pts, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Abby B lead Farmington with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Brooke J despite foul trouble finished with 9 points and 16 rebounds. Coach Picard dubbed her MVP of the tournament in which she averaged 12 points and 13+ rebounds per game. Brooke was one point shy in the final game of earning four double doubles for the weekend.

WEEK 2 ROUNDUP

Posted by FGTBL Admin at Nov 18, 2018 2:07PM PST ( 0 Comments )

Saturday: Farmington @ Simsbury

5th Grade/Developmental – Farmington 23 – Simsbury 15

The Farmington team really passed the ball well on Saturday at Simsbury jumping out to an 11-4 lead by halftime. The girls strung together lots of passes together that led to some easy buckets early. Lexi W and Olivia C each had 6 points for Farmington and Brianna G had 5 points. Leah M and Lauren J each had 6 rebounds and Emma G had 3 assists. It was a well-played game for the Farmington girls.

6th Grade Simsbury 26 – Farmington 23

Farmington 6th grade lost a tough game to Simsbury in the fourth quarter. Starting the second half down by three, Farmington outscored Simsbury by 8 to take the lead at the start of the fourth. Team play was evident in the point spread: Lucy S. and Vicky W. scoring 6, Leila T. scoring 5, and Ainsley K. scoring 4. Defensive plays from Kate W. and Cami K. caused Simsbury to turn the ball over against the press.

Defense Wins Again
Another balanced scoring attack and a stifling team defensive effort led the 7th grade team to its first road win of the season. Abby B. lead all Farmington scorers with 8 points but two others, Audrey H. and Anna L., had 6 apiece while 8 players in total scored. However, the defense truly shined on Saturday with key steals, rebounds and blocked shots, as well as possession changing jump balls, limited a good Simsbury team to only 16 points. At times the team struggled to convert some ‘easy’ shots but its defense rallied making it hard on Simsbury to capitalize during these scoring droughts. Coaches around the country will tell their players that defense wins games and Farmington proved that once again on Saturday.

Sunday: Farmington vs Southington

5th Grade/Developmental – Farmington 17 – Simsbury 8

The girls played great team defense and were lead by Tessa P’s 5 steals. Olivia C lead Farmington with 6 points and Kiera W and Hannah P each scored for the first time this season. Caroline R had 2 assists and the girls once again passed the ball really well. Leah M and Lauren J each had 5 rebounds and the girls played another good game from start to finish.

6th Grade – Farmington 19 – Simsbury 16

Farmington 6th grade team secured their first win against Simsbury. Lucy S. sunk three jumpers to have the high score of six points. Vicki W. and Leila T. each had four. Maddy W.helped swing the ball around the zone. When Southington switch to man, Kate L., and Emily S. both drove the lane to score against pressure. Elise A. added two with her textbook jump shot. Defensively, Ainsley K. kept the score low with 5 blocked shots. Demonstrating confident, patient play Farmington kept the lead throughout the entire game.

First Loss of Season Provides Hard Lessons
Finishing is a focus this year for the 7th grade team and Sunday’s game proved that there is much work still to be done. Finishing layups, finishing at the foul line, finishing on defense with a rebound – these are all things that make good teams great and against a very good Southington team the lack of finishing hurt. But as discussed in the locker room afterwards, what doesn’t break a team makes it stronger and this team is strong! Despite an early foot injury and foul trouble which lead to an early exit, Brooke J. lead the team with 9 points. She battled for position on both ends of the court. Sarah B finished with 8 points and worked hard at center despite being a slashing forward at heart. Foul trouble hampered Karishma and Reshma two tenacious defenders. So lessons were learned and this strong team will get even stronger.

More to come…

Week 1 Roundup Farmington vs Newington

Posted by FGTBL Admin at Nov 12, 2018 6:44AM PST ( 0 Comments )

D Team (5th/6th Combo): 24 -10

Farmington was led by Brianna G. with 8 points., Lauren J. with 6 points, Leah Mc. with 5 points. It was a good opening performance with 6 of the 9 girls helping with the scoring. The team played good defense and rebounded well.

6th Grade: 21 – 57

21 to 57.
It was a hard fought game today – our team scored three times as much as we did last year against Newington. This showed a huge improvement, and with only seven players!

Picard – 7th Grade: 46 – 8

Brooke J. Shines as Farmington 7th grade Dominates in Season Opener
With the first two baskets of the game, Brooke made her presence known, surprising Newington but not her coaches or team. “Most teams prepare for Sarah and Abby but Brooke opened up the middle with her constant movement in the paint and aggressive rebounding on both ends of the floor,” stated Coach Picard. This forced Newington to focus on Brooke too, leaving Sarah and Abby in one on one rebounding situations where they cleaned up on the offensive end. Capitalizing on teammates’ missed shots with put-back after put-back, each finished with 12 points while Brooke scored 8. Anna L. banked in several key shots finishing with 6 points as a balanced offensive attack had 8 of the 10 players scoring and all contributing at key moments in the game.

8th Grade: 27 – 18

In the 8th grade division, Newington defeated Farmington 27-18 in the first game of the regular season. Laci M.had a terrific game for Farmington. Laci led all scorers with 14 points. Meredith J.was a standout for Farmington on defense. Farmington held Newington scoreless in the fourth quarter. A sign of good things to come for the eighth graders.
